this tournament will never be my cup o' tea (or should i say mug o' suds) based on my commitment to 5-3-2 and 6-3-1 formations. congrats to the guys who crushed me though and good luck the rest of the way. thanks also to Arrows for running the tourney.

Every single game in our group has been determined by a single
goal, 3 of the teams have scored 8 and one has scored 7. FC Bayern
Tampa has run into some pretty bad luck, scoring 8 but losing each
game by a single goal. Looks to be an exciting finish!

Two teams clinched advancement to the knockout round in week nine. With one week to go, many teams still cling to hope.

Mark Chung Group

Carnival FC has claimed the number one spot in the Mark Chung Group, and now leads with nine points. Carnival mowed down Grass Pitch Please 4-0. GPP is two points behind the leader and still has a shot to advance. Jogo Feito downed Castle Hill Comets 3-1, and also sits two points back.

Carnival advances to the knockout round with a win in the final week 10 against Jogo Feito. Jogo and Grass Pitch both needs wins and some help. Castle Hill still has a slim chance, even in last place, but needs a big win in the final week against fellow Brew City teammate Grass Pitch, and a lot of help on goal difference.

Lubos Kubik Group

Top Shelf has clinched the top spot in the Lubos Kubik group and will advance to the knockout round. Top Shelf topped Blackburn Rovers 3-2. Mattylip FC and Dudley Street Hooigans tied 2-2.

Ivan McKinley Group

Damn Dirty Apes beat Mohawks 2-1, eliminating Mohawks from contention, and vaulting into first place in the Ivan McKinley group. Redneck SC got past Hounds FC 3-2, putting both teams tied in second place, three points behind the Apes. The winner of the Apes-Hounds game in week 10 will likely decide who advances, but Redneck can take the top spot with a win and some help.

Miklos Molnar Group

Dynamo Silver Spring is the second Brew City team to clinch a spot in the knockout round before the group stage has completed. DSS stopped 3Rivers SC 3-2. Una vida contigo split points with Wierder Bremen with a 4-4 tie, eliminating both teams.

Miles Joseph Group

Three teams are within a point of the top spot in the Miles Joseph group. Avengers and SDFC Macross each took a point home with their 2-2 tie, and lead the group with ten points. Arrows SC slipped past FC Bayern Tampa 3-2. Bayern is eliminated, having lost all five games in the group stage by a single goal. Arrows are a point behind, and will advance with a win against Avengers and a Macross loss or tie. Avengers and Macross will advance with a win and a loss or tie by the other team.

Troy Dayak Group

Real New Britski scored a big win in week nine, cruising past Wolford Wolves 4-2 into first place. RNB holds a three point lead over the Wolves, but also has a commanding goal difference of nine. RNB’s place in the knockout stage is all but secured. The Wolves will need a lopsided win next week against Flying Bulbuls and an equally lopsided loss by RNB to Nguyenning. Nguyenning was victorious over the Bulbuls in week nine 2-1, but both teams are eliminated.

Ariel Graziani Group

El fútbol es así and Aviators slugged it out to a 3-3 tie, leaving El fútbol es así in first place over the Aviators by three points. They are separated by one on goal difference. El fútbol es así will advance with a win or a tie in the final week against Laws of Lalas. Aviators will need a win and some help. LoL and Madrid Sport Team also finished in a tie, 2-2. Both are out of the knockout round.

Digital Takiwira Group

It’s a two-team race in the Digital Takiwira group. FC Byrd Turgler has the clear edge after crushing Friends of Rob Friend 5-0. FCBT is up two points over Glorydaze but holds a nine point lead on goal difference. Glorydaze lost important points in week nine, managing only a 2-2 tie against Low Expectations, but hope remains. The group winner will be decided in the final week when Glorydaze faces FCBT.

Please check my work. Good luck to everyone in week 10.

Don't the top two teams in each group advance to the knockout round?

From the rules posted in the Mug O Suds Page

Knockout Rounds

The Knockout round will start on MFLS week TBD. The top two teams in each group will advance. A blind draw is held to determine the first round match-ups. Each round consists of one game. The team with the most goals advances. If the teams are tied the winner will be determined by the same formula used in the Play-In round (above).

Your explanations on the progress of each group seems like only one team from each group will advance to the Knockout Rounds.

Pretty sure the plan has been one team per group.

Sorry, Hal. I didn't realize that I failed to make the change on the tournament home page. In my post from Sun 3/15 12:33 ET I communicated that I increased the group stage schedule to a double round robin, but narrowed the knockout round to only one team per person. I thought I reflected that on the top page, but either the change didn't commit or I forgot. I'm sorry for the confusion. I will make the correction on the web site later today.

I corrected the page. Thanks, again, for pointing that out. I see now that next week starts on Wednesday. Assuming there will be corrections to make on Monday, that leaves little time to set up the web site pages in time for a Wednesday start to the group stage. I'll do my best.

I need 5 goals from Altidore, Duvall, and BWP to draw Glorydaze and advance. You've got to be kidding me.

The group stage is complete. The eight division winners will advance to the knockout round. I wanted to get this out today so that everyone had some time to look over my work. I wanted at least a day to react to any errors.

Mark Chung Group

Jogo Feito advances out of the Mark Chung group. This group was the tightest of them all, with all four teams separated by only three points. Jogo Feito secured first place with a 7-3 domination over Carnival FC. Brew City teammates Grass Pitch Please and Castle Hill Comets finished deadlocked at 2.

Lubos Kubik Group

Top Shelf advances out of the Lubos Kubik Group. Two other Brew City Teams, Top Shelf and Dudley Street Hooligans, ended in a 2-2 tie, but Top Shelf’s lead was already too great. Mattylip FC got past Blackburn Rovers FC 4-3, powered by Kei Karmara’s pair of goals.

Ivan McKinley Group

Three teams finished in a tie with ten points. Hounds FC comes out on top with the best goal difference, and will advance to the knockout round. A big chunk of that came in the final 6-2 win against Damn Dirty Apes. Redneck topped Mohawks 4-3, but the overall goal difference wasn’t enough. (This group makes me nervous, so please check my work!)

Miklos Molnar Group

Dynamo Silver Spring dropped their final game against Brew City compatriot Wierder Bremen 4-3, but still advances into the knockout round. 3Rivers SC edged Una vida contigo 6-5 in the other match.

Miles Joseph Group

Arrows SC comes from third place to take the group and advance to the knockout round. Arrows beat Avengers 4-2. In a must-win game, Avengers lost to FC Bayern Tampa 6-4, for Tampa’s only win of the group stage.

Troy Dayak Group

Defending champion Real New Britski claims first place and a ticket to the quarterfinals with a 4-3 win over Nguyenning. Flying Bulbuls got their only win of the group stage, 5-3 over Wolford Wolves.

Ariel Graziani Group

El fútbol es así advances out of the Ariel Graziani group with a 5-4 victory over the Laws of Lalas. Kelyn Rowe came off the bench to provide the goal to win it for El fútbol. Madrid Sport Team topped Aviators 6-4 in the other match.

Digital Takiwira Group

The Digital Takiwira group was another very close group start to finish. All four teams were separated by only four points. FC Byrd Turgler dropped the final match to Glorydaze 3-5, but finished in first place and advances to the quarterfinals. Low Expectations got past Friends of Rob Friend 6-5 to finish in second by a point. (This group also made me nervous as I had an earlier spreadsheet error. Please check my work!)

Knockout Round

The eight group winners were randomized and placed in the first stage of the knockout bracket, which begins on MFLS week eleven. The quarter final winners will be randomized again for the semifinals. Each game of the knockout round is a single elimination.

Top Shelf has two Mugs championships under its belt in 2002 and 2013, and looks for a third against fellow Brew City mate Arrows SC. Dynamo Silver Spring faces last year’s champion Real New Britski. La Armada’s El fútbol es así is matched with the AAPL’s Hounds FC. Finally, FC Byrd Turgler from DoGS will play another Armada member Jogo Feito.

I'll say it again, please check my work. For this tournament I manually updated the standings, whereas in other tournaments I use spreadsheet formulas. I'll correct this next year. I spent a good amount of time this afternoon looking things over, and I think I have it right, but I dread finding an error and telling one team that thought it was advancing that now it's not.

Good luck to all!

Looks like I am advancing past El fútbol es así on the first tie breaker, most assists, 3-0. Now, for the semis. Ok, it is officially serious now. Bring on the random draw for the semis.

The quarterfinal round was a low-scoring affair to say the least. Not one team scored two or more goals.

Top Shelf slipped by Arrows SC 1-0 on a goal from Chris Wondolowski.

El fútbol es así and Hounds FC finished in a scoreless draw, but Hounds advances on the first tiebreaker with three assists to El fútbol’s zero.

FC Byrd Turgler and Jogo Feito traded goals and finished in a 1-1 tie. Jogo Feito advances on a single assist from Clint Dempsey, whereas FCBT failed to register any assists.

Dynamo Silver Spring advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 victory over the defending champion Real New Britski, thanks to Giles Barnes.

The semifinal pairings were randomly selected. Jogo Feito from La Armada Invencible faces Hounds FC from the AAPL. In the other match, two Brew City teams face off, with Dynamo Silver Spring taking on Top Shelf.

Please check my work, and good luck to all.

The Mugs O Suds Championship is set. Brew City’s Top Shelf will meet Hounds FC from the AAPL to decide who will take home the coveted Mug. Top Shelf took home the Mug in 2002 and again in 2013. This will be the Hounds first trip to the finals, and seeks to be the third AAPL team to win the title.

Hounds easily dispatched Jogo Feito 5-0. Top Shelf blanked Dynamo Silver Spring 2-0. The championship will take place on MFLS week 13. Good luck to the finalists!
