Mallace came on and made a difference.

Good crowd I think it was about 38,000

You would have been proud Fred of Mallace's 50 yd
pass right to the chest of a perfectly-timed Porter.
Breath-taking

I can't really say I contributed anything to his
development. Even at 12 when I coached him he
probably knew more than me about playing the game.
He and his brother were obsessed. They played every
spare minute.

I follow Mallace on Twitter. Here's his post from
last night:

That's got to be a big lift for the MTL team.

Also, that was the exact same lineup as the first leg. It's a
pretty good glimps if your looking at a possible fantasy pick.

Except the goal and assist were awarded to subs.
Toia is definitely bargain basement, could be the
next Jeb Brovsky if he starts consistently.

Toia started 24 games for Chivas last year.

Note to Pachuca: you might have wanted to have
somebody closing down on Mallace on that goal. He
seemed all alone out there. I wonder what the
Pachuca coach said afterwards.

I'm sure y'all are waiting for my report from RFK
tonight. DC's two goals were not near enough to get
out of the hole they dug for themselves in Costa
Rica. I don't know if the better team advanced so
much as the team in better form advanced. I'd like
to see United play Alajuelense when they are both at
speed.

Good to see Bill Hamid back. It was night and day
from the Dykstra experience last week. Chippy match
saw nine yellows and Ben ejected at 43'. I saw
hints of chemistry between Espindola and Arrieta,
too bad we'll have to wait six weeks to see it.

Good Luck MTL!

The Montreal Miracle continues! Goals by
Ignacio Piatti and Víctor Cabrera give the Impact a
halftime lead over Alajuelense.

The thing is, if you look at the last four-five years, it is only the two
or three Mexican powerhouses beating MLS teams anymore. I
appears that any MLS team will systematically beat the "regular"
Mexican ones. Which supports my view of MLS actually being
already better than the Mexican Liga. What we do not have, due to
the draft system and league policies being more designed to
promote parity, are the one or two superpowers you get in most
other leagues (which I see as a good thing: as the league improves,
it won't depend on one or two teams for international
competitions).

And then you have the "run of the mill" Herediano at the verge of
eliminating Club America, which means that if Montreal maintain
this pace, they may have a superb chance to actually win everything
and place MLS where it deserves. Rooting for the Canadians in this
one.

With my team in England right now, last night we were at Fulham / Leeds. What a great atmosphere!
