Started this in a new thread, Lu.

Eh...we really don't have much in the way of recent history losing to either of those teams, either, and England, Portugal, and the US are virtually peers when it comes to World Cup success (or lack thereof) so it's pretty meh. It would be more apt to hate the Dutch or the Belgians, but there's nothing there, either.

The Germans are too good to hate that much. No teams in Asia really do anything for me. Nor in Africa...you might think Ghana, and there's a little something there, but how could you really be mad at those guys when they gave us Freddy Adu?

I don't know what relations are like these days
between Honduras and El Salvador, but La guerra del
fútbol (also known as the Soccer War or 100 Hour
War) deserves mention.

During 1970 WCQ, there was fighting between fans at
the first game in Tegucigalpa on 8 June 1969, which
Honduras won 1–0. Salvador won the second game 3-0
on 15 June 1969 in San Salvador, which was followed
by even greater violence. A play-off match took
place in Mexico City on 26 June 1969. El Salvador
won the decisive third game 3–2 after extra time.
That same day, El Salvador dissolved all diplomatic
ties with Honduras.

Military action commenced 14 July. A cease-fire was
arranged on the night of 18 July; it took full
effect on 20 July. 6000 dead, 12,000 wounded, 50,000
people rendered homeless

Yes! The famed soccer war has to be mentioned. It would rank higher in the collective mindset if they were big countries and bigger soccer powers. I presume that Georgia and the Ukraine are kept separate (amongst other international rivalries) from Russia to avoid sparking similar confrontation.
